Is there cost to submitting a Business Registration application?  top

There is no cost involved in completing and submitting a business registration application.

Do I need to select/enter Trade Names?  top

No, this is an optional field. If you are a business entity formed in New Jersey and have valid alternate name(s) registered, you will be able to select one Trade Name for display on the Business Registration Certificate.

For New Jersey Partnerships or Proprietorships as well as non-New Jersey Business Entities, you can enter one Primary and up to nine Additional Trade Names. If Primary Trade Name is entered, it will be displayed on the Business Registration Certificate.

Are there any words I cannot include in my Trade Name?  top

Do I need an EIN or SSN to register a business?  top

All corporations, LLC’s and limited partnerships formed in New Jersey must register using EIN. Partnership or proprietorships with employees need to register using EIN, but those with no employees can use either EIN or SSN. This number will serve as your business tax ID in New Jersey.

Do I need an Entity ID to register a business?  top

Entity ID which is also known as a Corporate Business ID is a 10-digit number assigned by New Jersey Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services upon Business Formation filing. It is required to register a business in New Jersey unless you are registering a Partnership or Proprietorship or a non-New Jersey business entity who either has employees residing in New Jersey or requires Business Registration Certificate for applying for New Jersey State Contract.

What is New Jersey Business Code?  top

New Jersey has defined 4-digit numbers to identify the product group or service of your business. The complete list is available here.

When you start entering a keyword or 4-digit code in the field, it will start displaying options that match. You will need to select one of the displayed options for selecting a valid code.

What is Standard Industrial Code (SIC)?  top

This four-digit numeric code was assigned by the U.S. government to help identify what the primary business function is for a business. The uniformity and comparability helps in the presentation of statistical data collected by the federal government, state agencies and private organizations.

What is the NAICS Code?  top

NIACS-North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is a six digit code system whose goal is to produce common industry definitions for Canada, Mexico, and the United States. These common definitions help economic analyses of the economies of the three North American countries. The information then produces information on inputs and outputs, industrial performance, productivity, unit labor costs, and employment.

How do I know what NAICS code to use?  top

You can find more information on NACIS codes here, which provides a search box on the left side of the page. Search can be performed on either a keyword or NAICS code.

You can also start entering keywords or 6-digit code in NAICS field on the Registration form itself and it will start displaying options that match. You will be able to select one of the displayed options.

How can I go back to a section of my application and make changes?  top

For applications still in progress, you can use the left-hand navigation to jump to different sections. Just click on the section title listed to go to the section and make changes. Note: section title listed in grey are not available until you complete the previous section. You can also use the edit buttons on the Review Page to return to a previous section and make changes.

I need to file a change to my business/amend articles of my certificate, how do I do that?   top

When will I receive my Registration documents? Will I receive my documents by mail?   top

After you have successfully completed the registration application you will be presented with a confirmation page that provides link(s) to download your document(s). While everyone gets the copy of Business Registration Document, the Sales Tax Certificate of Authority is available to only those eligible based on application submitted.

You will need to download the Sales Tax Certificate of Authority and the Business Registration document electronically as they will not be sent to you by mail. Business Registration Certificate is, however, mailed in 10 business days. You can download your Business Registration Certificate in 2 business days after registration filing from here .

I forgot to download my documents, can I still retrieve them?   top

Yes. Your documents are available for 30 days from the purchased date. Upon successful completion of your transaction, users will receive a confirmation email that contains the link to the documents. If you do not have the email, then you may call (609) 586-2600 for assistance.

What happens if I don’t finish my application and close my browser?   top

All information will be lost. You will need to start over from the beginning. It is strongly recommended that you complete your application before closing your browser.

What if my PC crashes while I’m working on my application?   top

All information will be lost. You will need to start over from the beginning.

How long can I leave my browser open with no activity without losing my application?  top

For security purposes, after 30 minutes of inactivity all information will be lost.
