VOORHEES STATE PARK

Located in the wooded hills of Northern Hunterdon County, two miles north of the town of High Bridge, Voorhees State Park is a popular hiking and camping destination. This 1,040-acre park can be reached from Interstate 78, taking Route 31 North to Route 513 North or from Route 206 to Route 513 South. Family campsites, shelters and group campsites are available from April 1 – October 31. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring and parking for two vehicles. 

THE VOORHEES OFFICE IS CLOSED. Voorhees State Park and it's campgrounds are adminitstered by Spruce Run Recreation Area 908-638-8572.

All Campers must register in person at nearby Spruce Run Recreation Area, 68 Van Syckles Rd, Clinton NJ 08809.

The entrance to the Voorhees Campground is located on Observatory Road one mile south of the main entrance along Route 513.

Important Information

PETS AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE CAMPGROUNDS.

Black Bears- Bears are present in New Jersey.  During your stay at the park all coolers and food related items must be stored in the trunk of your vehicle at all times.  Garbage should be promptly removed from your campsite and put in the dumpsters provided. 

Minimum Age- Camping facilities and sites must be reserved by at least 1 person 18years of age or older, sho shall occupy and be responsible for the facility or site during the rental period. 

Occupancy- Each site can accommodate a maximum of 6 people (including visitors).  Visitors are permited at campging facilities between the hours of 8am and 8pm.  

Vehicles- 2 vehicles are permitted on each campsite.  All vehicles must be registered upon checkin and they must park in designated gravel areas.  The make, color, license plate and state of registration for each must be provided at check in.  *Parking for additional vehicles is availible in a nearby overflow lot for an additional charge of $5/night/vehicle.  Please contact the park office for specific details. 

Quiet Hours- From 10pm until 6am, quiet hours are strictly enforced.  Violators of this policy may be evicted. 

Generators- Outside designated quiet hours, generators may be used.  If the use of a genreator is deemed unreasonably loud by the facility staff then the individual use of a generator may be prohibited /limited. 

Fires/Firewood- Fires must be kept within the rings provided.  Only dead and down wood may be used for fuel.  No chainsaws are allowed in the campgrounds and cutting down of trees alive or dead is prohibited. Firewood is also sold at the Spruce Run Recreation Area Office. 

Shelters- If you are staying in a shelter, please make sure you have your 4 digit access code prior to arrival.  It is located on your confirmation email and can also be confirmed upon checkin at the Spruce Run Office. 

After Hours Arrival- If you arrive after hours, you must check in at the Spruce Run Office the following morning by 9am.

Attraction Details

Lots to do for outdoor enthusiasts, including a visit to Ken Lockwood Gorge and accessing the Columbia trail section of Patriots Path, the State's longest mountain biking and jogging trail. Spruce Run Recreation Area, a popular destination for fishing and boating, is short drive away. New Jersey Astronomical Association Observatory is located within the park. A short drive away is High Bridge, described as quintessential small town America.

Located on the highest elevation in the park, 840 feet above sea level, the New Jersey Astronomical Association (NJAA) observatory and education center offers astronomical viewing experiences for all ages. Featuring the largest public telescope in the state, along with three mini observatories, NJAA delivers monthly lectures and dynamic youth programs covering a broad range of astronomy activities. The scenic overlook on Hill Acres/Observatory Road has a breathtaking view of Round Valley Reservoir, which lies in the gently rolling hills of Hunterdon County.

Voorhees has seven miles of trails that meander through the park and are popular for hiking, jogging and bicycling.

The Highlands Trail extends over 150 miles from Storm King Mountain on the Hudson River in New York south to Riegelsville, New Jersey, on the Delaware River. A 2.3 mile section takes hikers across the park through varying forest terrain.

Voorhees State Park picnic areas are situated in wooded settings throughout the park and are ideal for family picnics. Picnic areas have charcoal grills and picnic tables, all first- come, first- served. A playground and open playing fields are nearby. Charcoal fires must be confined to the metal grills provided, or to grills brought by the picnicker.

Voorhees offers three reservable group picnic areas. Facilities include picnic tables, charcoal grills, a covered pavilion, playground, parking and restrooms. For more information contact the Park Office. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.

Hunting and fishing are permitted and subject to NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife regulations. The current hunting map is available at the Park Office. Willoughby Brook is designated as a “Wild Trout Stream” and Wild Trout Stream regulations apply. Directions

From New York or North Jersey: Take Route 78 West to exit 17, merge with Route 31 North. At second traffic light, make a right onto 513 North through High Bridge. Follow signs to the park. From Pennsylvania and Western New Jersey: Take I-78 East to exit 16. Proceed through traffic light. At yield sign turn left, merge onto Route 31 North. At second light on Route 31 North turn right on Route 513 North through High Bridge. Follow signs to park.

Campground entrance is located on Observatory Rd, a mile south of the State Park entrance on Rte 513.
